Danube River Cruise - Day 6 -- Monday, October 29, 2018 - Passau and Regensburg, Germany

Another great breakfast readied us for our morning walking tour of Passau. It is a 2500 year old town in Southern Bavaria. There are 50,000 inhabitants of which 15,000 are students. The university is only 50 years old. Passau is called the city of 3 rivers (Danube, Inn and Ilz) and the city of 3 countries ( Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria). We saw the Town Hall, Passau Fort - the 2nd largest fort/castle in Europe),the home of Lucas Kerns and the cathedral of St. Stephen. It was a cute, quaint little town. I love the different colored buildings. Our guide told us that in days past when people couldn’t read they painted the buildings to identify it - ie red- food, dark red-meat, green -pharmacy, pink-bakery. The lion, the symbol for Bavaria, and the Red wolf, the symbol for Passau were on display everywhere. We went back to the ship for lunch and then took off at 1:00 for a tour of Regensburg.

Regensburg is larger than Passau with 150,000 and 30,000 students. Their major industries are BMW, Continental Tire, and electronics. It has an unemployment rate of only 1.7% but it is getting to be an expensive place to live. We walked over the Stone Bridge and the old town. We saw the Town Hall and St. Peter’s Cathedral, an example of baroque architecture. We didn’t have much time on our own to explore but we did stop for a hot chocolate to warm our insides. It was an 1 1/2 hour drive back just in time for port call and then dinner.

Dinner again was to die for. Onion cake, garlic soup, salmon trout or chicken, and a luscious dessert are what we've come to expect from our chef. We skipped the entertainment - dancing - no surprise there - but the days have been very full. Bed time.

Food has been fantastic

Our chef is really spoiling us

Our waiter Kris is a riot. He takes good care of us.
